Rising Damp

What is Rising Damp

Rising damp is a form of moisture intrusion that occurs when groundwater travels upward through porous building materials, such as brick, stone, or plaster. This happens due to capillary action, where water is drawn up through small pores in the material.

Signs of Rising Damp:

Damp or stained walls – (especially near the bottom, roughly, up to about 1.5meter high)

Peeling paint or wallpaper

Crumbly or deteriorating plaster

White, powdery salt deposits (efflorescence)

Musty smell

Warped wood or rotting skirting boards

Causes of Rising Damp:

Lack of damp-proof course (DPC), a protective barrier in walls)

Failure of a damp-proof course (DPC), a protective barrier in walls

High groundwater levels

Defective external surroundings of a building (penetrating damp)

Mould & Condensation

How to treat Rising Damp

Install or repair a damp-proof course.

Apply waterproof coatings or sealants.

Improve air circulation around the property.

Improve defective surroundings of a building.

Use specialist injections to create a chemical barrier against moisture.

Treatment to stop Rising Damp

At Damp Proofing & Co, we provide comprehensive solutions for Rising Damp. We inject silicone emulsion cream and or liquid into the mortar. The chemicals are formulated with silane/siloxane-based compounds, which are highly effective at repelling moisture.

The chemical works by diffusing into the pools of bricks and mortar. Once the active ingredient of the chemical has diffused into the wall, it chemically reacts with the minerals inside to form hydrophobic chains of molecules. With the correct amount of chemical, an unbroken DPC can be established across the whole length of the wall. When damp-proofing cream is injected into a wall, it undergoes a chemical transformation that creates a water-repellent barrier within the masonry

Causes of Rising Damp

Structural Damage

Prolonged exposure to moisture can weaken and damage building materials. Damp can lead to rotting of wooden structures, corrosion of metal components, and deterioration of masonry and concrete. Over time, this can compromise the structural integrity of your house.

Mould and Mildew

Growth Damp environments provide a breeding ground for mould and mildew. These fungal growths not only affect the appearance of your home bust can also cause health problems for the occupants. Mould and mildew can spread across surfaces, discolour walls, ceilings, and fabrics, and release airborne spores that may trigger allergies or respiratory problems.

Unpleasant Odours

Damp often results in musty or unpleasant odours in your home. This may be particularly noticeable in basements, bathrooms, cabinets or areas with poor ventilation

Damage to Interior Finishes

Damp can cause damage to interior finishes such as paint, wallpaper, and plaster. Damp can lead to peeling paint, bubbling walls and crumbling plaster, requiring repairs and reapplication of finishes.

What is a Damp Proof Course

Most problems with rising damp occur because no damp proofing course is installed, or the damp proofing course may be faulty and ineffective. Damp proofing is a waterproof layer used in construction and applied to the external walls and floors of a building to prevent moisture from passing through the walls of the building. The layer of damp proofing essentially repels water and if your property doesn’t have damp proofing, then it may be susceptible to issues with rising damp. When a building lacks a damp proof course, it becomes vulnerable to rising damp, which can lead to structural problems and also health issues relating to respiratory and allergy problems.

Signs of Rising Damp

Rising Damp

Without a DPC, moisture from the ground rises through the walls by capillary action. This dampness can travel up to about 1.5 meters above ground level.

Mould Growth

Damp walls create the perfect environment for mould and mildew, which can lead to respiratory problems and allergies.
Unpleasant musty odours.

Structural Damage

Crumbled plaster, blistering and peeling paint – Moisture weakens wall finishes.
Salt deposits – Minerals from the ground accumulate on walls, causing powdery white stains (efflorescence).
Weakened masonry & timber – Continuous dampness can cause bricks and mortar to deteriorate, and timber elements to rot.

Heat Loss and Energy Bills

Damp walls lose heat faster, making it harder to maintain a warm interior, increasing heating costs.
